INVENTOR CONVERTER

This Converter writes Inventor models in the file format defined by Silicon Graphics. It adds one entry to the conversion lists:

Inventor .iv

It supports only the Inventor 1.0 ASCII script format.

The binary format of Inventor files is not documented.

The Windows version of this Converter does not import Inventor or VRML at this time.

The SGI IRIX version of Interchange has another Inventor Converter that uses the native SGI Inventor libraries. For more information about this Converter, see the Installation chapter. The SGI-only Inventor Converter also imports Inventor files in ASCII or binary. It adds two entries to the conversion lists:

Inventor 2.0 ASCII .iv
Inventor 2.0 binary .iv

Geometry
On export, the resulting Inventor file has a Separator enclosing the entire hierarchy of objects. Each object is enclosed within its own Separator with a Label of the object's name. Each object's polygons are stored as IndexedFaceSets.

In the SGI IRIX version of this Converter, all imported Inventor geometry will be converted to triangles upon reading. This allows Inventor and VRML 1.0 geometry to be processed and exported to other polygonal file formats within the Interchange system.

Also, saving to the "Inventor 2.0" formats in the SGI version results in slightly different Inventor files than the native Interchange version. By passing data through the system libraries, this Converter can write the undocumented binary format as well as create a standard ASCII file.

Material attributes
Each material includes ambientColor, diffuseColor, specularColor and shininess, corresponding to the same values in each Interchange material. The MaterialBinding is PER_FACE_INDEXED with NormalBinding NONE. Texture UV coordinates and texture bitmap names are preserved.
